Jeremy Browne MP (centre) campaigns alongside Taunton Deane residents Tom Boyd, Wogan Bristow and Neil O'Dockery for wheel clampers to be subject to tighter regulations.

Taunton constituency MP Jeremy Browne is celebrating after his campaign to introduce tighter regulations for car clampers won the official backing of the Government. Home Office Minister Alan Campbell MP has written to Jeremy Browne giving details of the new rules. Jeremy Browne has made numerous representations on behalf of Taunton Deane motorists who have been badly treated by car clampers.

In his letter, Alan Campbell MP promised that an "independent, fair and transparent appeals process" will be introduced for motorists who wish to make a complaint against a car clamper. He sites examples of when motorists could expect to make successful objections, including "where the maximum release fee has been exceeded and cases where a fee should not have been imposed at all, such as if the signage was inadequate". Mr Campbell promised that the maximum fee will be set to protect motorists from "exorbitant charges".

Jeremy Browne said:

"I have campaigned vigorously for better protection to be given to motorists who are the victims of unreasonable car clampers. The outrageous behaviour that some Taunton Deane residents have suffered has been unacceptable and some of the fines imposed have been absolutely extortionate. I am delighted that the Government Home Office Minister has now decided to take action."
