Taunton constituency MP Jeremy Browne has been out on patrol with the Taunton Street Pastors in the centre of town on a Saturday night.

Jeremy Browne said:

"The idea of Street Pastors has already been tried in other British cities and towns and has been a great success.

"The initiative has just been introduced in Taunton and I wanted to see first-hand what was involved.

"The Street Pastors are volunteers from local church groups. They are working in liaison with the police and are recognisable with their distinctive uniforms.

"Most people who go out for a night in Taunton town centre enjoy themselves and cause no trouble. The problems arise when people have drunk far too much and are no longer able to look after themselves properly.

"The Street Pastors are able to supplement the work of the police and door-staff by looking after anyone who needs assistance.

"There will be many parents who will be pleased that the Street Pastors are providing another level of protection for younger people in the town centre.

"The Street Pastors are very dedicated and stay on patrol as late as 4.00am. That is a significant commitment from the volunteers and I know they value being able to make a positive difference to our community."
